PaviPama is the combined online storefront of Pavi and Pama, two of Malta’s biggest and most recognisable shopping centres.
Located in Manuel Dimech Street, Qormi, and covering approximately 16,000 square metres, the Pavi Shopping Complex is home to one of Malta’s largest supermarkets, the largest retail hall on the island, and a spectrum of outlets representing local businesses. Pama Shopping Village is located in Triq Valletta, Mosta, and is likewise home to a vast retail hall as well as over 30 outlets, retail shops, and fashion brands.
The Challenge: A battle against time
The team behind Pavi and Pama contacted Codeblack to help restore and upgrade their website after it started crashing and failing to respond. This occurred due to the lock-down measures implemented by the Government to mitigate the proliferation of Covid-19. As customers flocked online to carry out their shopping, the PaviPama website experienced a sudden, dramatic spike in visitors and transactions. As their website was not built to handle a high volume of traffic, this surge caused the shopfront to continuously crash.
This situation presented a nightmare scenario for the team behind PaviPama. PaviPama was at risk of losing its customers to other online shopfronts, and it was also missing the opportunity to acquire new customers who wereshopping online for the first time due to the pandemic
The Results: Multiply by 50
Well aware that it was working against the clock, the Codeblack team quick concluded it would be more effective to build something from scratch than to fix and tweak the website PaviPama already had, which suffered from poor UX design, long loading times, and inefficient integrations.
Without increasing running costs related to hosting or server size, Codeblack successfully reduced the loading time from an average of 13 seconds to under 1 second, integrated the website’s digital infrastructure with their internal stock management system, and reduced the stock synchronisation process from 6 hours to under 15 minutes.
The Codeblack team also redesigned the website to increase its usability, user-friendliness, and make it stand out from competitors with a bold, welcoming aesthetic.
The new PaviPama e-Commerce website handles 50x the previous volumes of transactions and concurrent visitors. Moreover, the PaviPama website now ranks in the first three places on google for most searches related to online shopping in Malta
